And also the process produces some contaminants in the product gas, such as tars, NH3, H2S, HCl and SO2. Particularly, tar is highly undesirable because of the detrimental problems associated with condensation of tar in the process equipment, pipe lines as well as in end use applications such as engines and turbines. Therefore tar decomposition techniques are desired to prevent blockage troubles in biomass gasification processes.

In this study, various kind of catalysts were examined to improve the performance of tar decomposition at low oxygen atmosphere. It found that catalyst of BaZrO3−based Co or catalyst of BaZrO3−based Mn including Ni had strongly activity for tar decomposition and syngas generation. It also found that these catalysts kept the activity for long run time.

Expermental setup for tar decomposition

Surface image of an original catalyst (SEM).

Tar generation from biomass without the catalyst.

The original catalyst was limited carbon deposits.

Energy Conversion System Development of catalyst for tar decomposition Background ＆ Objectives In biomass gasification, product gas including H2, CO, CH4 and (C2 + C3) is obtained, which can be used for heat and electricity generation, or for synthesis of liquid fuels and methanol.
